On release day, we played and finished Marvel’s Wolverine, and here are 10 things we love about the game. Fun fact: about a week before launch, we dropped a little wishlist of 4 things we were dying to see in the game. Every single one got paid off big time, so you’ll catch a few CALLED IT moments below. Indeed, manifestation is real, folks.

SPOILER WARNING: We’re gonna talk about specific game moments, so bookmark this and come back later if you wanna go in blind.

Okay then, here we go!

1. The Combat

At first, we thought this was just a basic, grindy hack-and-slash. As a result, early on, the enemies felt overwhelming and Logan’s moveset was quite bare-bones. But as we progressed and leveled up the skill tree, we unlocked some kickass skills, animations, finishers, and combos. By the end, we really felt like Wolverine.

That slow burn from “okay, this is fine” to “I am an unstoppable rage machine” is the good stuff.

2. Severing Limbs

One of our first “holy shit” moments was watching Logan dismember both arms off a Reaver, then lop the leg clean off another one. And since the Reavers are cybernetic mercs, it’s less “oh no!” and more sparks, explosions, and pure satisfaction.

That’s Wolverine.

3. A Proper Wolverine vs. Sabretooth Battle

We got teased with an arm-wrestling match first, and things got icy real quick. Victor just walks away and jumps off the bar terrace like it was nothing. Later in the story, we were HYPED when a proper Logan vs. Victor throwdown finally happened. Then the game pulled the ol’ Deadpool treatment on us.

As Sabretooth attacks, his right arm gets cut off. What a bummer. How could they do this to us AGAIN? Lo and behold, a couple of chapters later, Sabretooth returns with his arm regrown thanks to the Helix Engine.

And NOW we get the real fight. We’re not gonna lie: what a battle. We died a bunch of times, and the payoff at the end hit us right in the feels. Remember when we said pre-launch that we’d cry if Insomniac finally gave us the definitive adamantium-on-adamantium throwdown we’d been begging for since the ’80s?

Reader, we cried.

4. The Motorcycle Sequences

We all saw the seven-minute gameplay preview, and it played out pretty much exactly like that in the actual game. We thought that was it. Surprise, surprise. We got another one.

And there’s no better backdrop for it than the streets of Japan. This time, it’s not just a chase. You’re fighting the Hand’s ninjas and dishing out cool-ass death blows on the side of the freeway.

We literally asked for more Motorcycle Logan in our wishlist, and Insomniac went and doubled it. Still holding out for that helicopter fight à la X-Men Origins: Wolverine, though.

5. The Parkour Nightmare Trials

We love the story chase sequences that mix in parkour. They’re easily some of our favorite parts of the game.

But an actual trial course where you beat specific times to earn an Adamantium rating? Sign us up.

We didn’t skip a single one, and yeah, we got Adamantium on all of them.Humble brag.

6. Shinjuku

This neon-soaked district is a character in itself. The detail in the night scenes is unreal, the rain adds even more atmosphere, and the contrast between day and night is just chef’s kiss.

There’s something about running through Shinjuku as Logan that makes the whole setting feel alive, even when you’re doing nothing more than wandering around.

7. The Skins

Mixing and matching skins as you move through the story is such a fun time. We also love how specific outfits get woven into the story based on the theme or vibe of a place. Patch in the casino? Madripoor’s finest.

Tank Top Logan at the Essex House? Absolutely. Then there’s Old Man Logan, Mutant X, and the classic John Byrne brown-and-tan outfit across different missions.

We called this wardrobe STACKED before we even booted the game up, and yep, we’ve since sunk an embarrassing amount of time into that menu. No regrets.

8. The Nightmare Cabin

This one genuinely surprised us. Not only does it recreate the infamous sad Wolverine meme, but it also lets you pick different chapters to replay. There are also Nightmare Trials tucked in here, where you can run the parkour courses and Horde Mode.

And hey, we asked for a full-res copy of that meme pre-launch. Turns out, it’s the backdrop of the whole mission-select screen, so now we get to stare at it as much as we want.

Called it. Again.

9. New Game+ Available on Day One

We appreciate this one a lot. You can replay the whole story while keeping all your progress: the skills you grinded for, the liquor you collected, the skins, all of it.

Then you get to run it back fully leveled up and pay a little visit to the enemies that bullied you earlier in the game. Revenge is a dish best served with adamantium.

10. The Logan-Jean Grey Romance

Everyone knows this already: this is THE loveteam of the X-Men. And we love how the story slowly builds the tension between these two.

In this game, it’s the awkward meet-cute, the little moments, the many times they finally get some alone time only to get interrupted by enemies, the lovers’ quarrels, and, of course, that payoff in the casino.

Just perfection. We are so here for it. That’s our 10, and yeah, four of them came straight from our pre-launch wishlist.

We asked Insomniac for a lot of things before Marvel’s Wolverine came out, and somehow, the game managed to answer back with almost everything we wanted—and a few things we didn’t even know we needed.
